You know what they say dear folks, life happens in the blink of an eye. It really does, and even though I try (and if I may humbly add, succeed) to appreciate and live in the moment as much as I can, I am guilty of falling back on all the clichés about time when I look back at old pictures. A lot has changed in my beloved Amsterdam, but luckily quite of few typical things always remained the same: the quirky alleys, the stories that are told in the lovely brown bars and of course, its unique and breathtaking sights that I will never stop adoring.
Recently, I bumped into some lovely shots from back in the days versus that exact same location as it is now, that I’d simply love to share with you. Time to get a little nostalgic even. Hope you’ll enjoy!

First of all, if you’ve been in my beautiful street the Bloemgracht, you might recognize this corner with the Lijnbaansgracht. This building used to be an old postal office and savings bank.

The lovely Utrechtsestraat is located in the heart of town and is home to many lovely shops. Looks like the street was already popular way before my time.

Just around the corner of my home is the Rozengracht, this too is a street with quite some nice shops and places to eat nowadays: Kessens, Cannibale Royale, Hutspot, Ben Cohen, Urban Cacao, Raw Materials and Brandstof are some of my personal favourites.

Not much has changed, these beautiful facades in the heart of the Jordaan are a treat of the eyes for over a century already!

Another just lovely shot from my neighbourhood!

It is so great to see that the typical “Jordanese” brown café on this corner has been around for over a century now. It’s a good thing that at some places, it feels like time has been standing still.

For over a century, this beautiful building in the Jordaan luckily remained the same and is visited often due to the great local market, that is called after its location and held every Monday and weekend.

These quirky alleys in the Jordaan have always been adored by many.

This iconic church was built between 1620 and 1631 and so has been around for centuries already. Till this day, I still appreciate the great architectural beauty of this church.
As I’ve started with a saying today, I’d like to end with a very appropriate one as well. Amsterdam is truly like wine: it doesn’t get older, it simply gets better. Cheers!
Sincerely,
Mr. J
