Cafe De Jonge Wees: A Taste Of Authentic Amsterdam

Ah, how the great people of Amsterdam have been spoiled the last couple of days. The sun is already giving us a slight sneak peek of how gorgeous Spring can be. With the sun shining cheerfully on the canals, I found myself secretly daydreaming about that great first beer of the year on a terrace. And even though the weather today is lovely too, I slightly fear that when it is time for a “vrijmibo”, one might prefer the comfort of a roof (and heater) over one’s head. And as a lovely, little, authentic brown café relatively recently opened in the middle of my Jordaan, I thought I’d tell you a little more about this gem, called “Café De Jonge Wees”.

Quite some time ago, I let you in on my favourite authentic brown café’s in the Jordaan, where you can experience the true character of my neighbourhood. And this new gem, in my humble opinion, already makes the list.

“Café De Jonge Wees” is the little sister of one of my other favourite old school places around: Proeflokaal A. van Wees. It opened its doors last summer, on the corner of the Looiersgracht, right next to the water, which is pure joy during Spring and Summer.

This place naturally serves the great jenevers from its big sister, of which you can try multiple by opting for tasting, enjoy multiple beers along with a great selection of the finest Dutch bites like tasty old cheese, “bitterballen” and “ossenworst”.

And you might wonder what the ingredients are to a good ol’ authentic brown café, and after visiting quite a few, I think I might now the formula: a cosy, old school interior as if it was the 60’s again, a great diverse crowd who’re looking for a night of “gezelligheid”, a certain style of groovy old (Dutch) tunes and singalongs, and last but not least the opportunity to gather with some friends and experience a (preferably Ajax) sports match together. And Café De Jonge Wees is and offers just that.

So, it does not take a genius to guess where you’ll be finding me tonight. Care to join me?

Cheers to a great one folks!

Sincerely,
Mr. J
