It is the 6th of December today, which means two things: first of all, “Pakjesavond” was yesterday and some of us might be facing a slight “pepernoten”-and-chocolate-letters-hangover. Second of all, the first week of December almost already over and while people are counting down the last days of the year, some of us start to wonder about New Year’s resolutions. ‘Cause my oh my, I’ve said it before and I will say it again: it truly happens in the blink of an eye folks.
However, last year, I already told you about the fact that I always tend to refer to December as the Friday of the months. While you might still be daydreaming about the great party you had the other night, the next exciting party or event is already knocking on your door. And as there are so many(!) great things happening during this festive month, I was thinking about guiding you through this month by letting you in on some of the most exciting things to do, see and experience during this special month in Amsterdam.
Markets you wouldn’t want to miss
Beware for little spoiler alert: next week I will share my list of favourite Christmas markets in my beloved city. But in the meanwhile, two very lovely Christmas Markets will take place, which are simply too lovely not to share. So, hereby already two markets that definitely made my list too: Sissy-Boy’s Christmas Market Maison de Noël at the beautiful West-Indian House on the Haarlemmerstraat and Sunday Market Festive Edition at Rokin. Both markets are just the perfect place to find some original and beautiful gifts for your nearest and dearest.
Hot drinks, fried bites and good ol’ games
During the darkness that December is also known for, one of my favourite indoor activities, with good company of course, is playing good ol’ (board)games. Luckily, my city offers quote a few great venues where to do exactly that. Next to the TonTon Club naturally, I adore some brown café’s or restaurants to get the “competition” started while having a few bites and drinks on the side. My go to places to do so are Floor 17, Ping Pong Parck, Mooie Boules, Final Touch and De Prael’s great Bingo evenings (preferably the Hazes edition naturally ;)).
Gliding and sliding
Without any hesitation, I would claim that it is by distance the most popular sport during the chilly months: I am very much talking about ice skating indeed. With such high demands, Amsterdam has multiple lovely locations where you can show-off, and/or maybe work on, your ice-skating skills. For the more leisure ice-skaters amongst us, I would definitely recommend checking out the newest skating rink at Westergas or the very popular skating rinks at Museumplein (ICE Amsterdam) and the rink at Rembrandtplein. But for the real speedy pro’s, I’d recommend visiting Jaap Edenbaan.
Fun seasonal festivities
And finally, as I told you earlier, there are just loads and loads of great events that might result in some sort of FOMO (Fear Of Missing Out). And as that would be a true pity during this festive month, I thought I would share some of my personal favorite events with you.
Christmas Sing Along Concert by Cor Bakker – Westerchurch, 20th and 21st of December
Westerchurch must be the most iconic building my beloved neighbourhood. With its stunning tower and incredibly rich history, it’s is truly always a great place to visit. This month, composer Cor Bakker is hosting a true Christmas Sing-along in the Westerchurch. So, if you’re not musically in the mood yet and you want to be, or you really cannot wait to sing along with the carols, this definitely sounds like a fun fest!
Amsterdam Light Festival – till the 19th of January 2020
This year marks the 8th edition of Amsterdam Light Festival: a great festival with the most stunning light-artworks that you get to experience either from the water on a boat or when strolling passed the canals. This year’s theme is “Disrupt!” and from what I saw the other day, once again, the artists did not disappoint.
World Christmas Circus – 19th of December till the 5th of January 2020
The famous World Christmas Circus is celebrating its 35(!) edition this year. In one of the most breathtaking theatre venues of Amsterdam, namely Amsterdam’s Royal Theatre Carré, the finest of the finest circus performers (or rather stars!) will come together to truly blow you away. With over 100 different nationalities, this show is nothing short of true amazement, pure talent and overall entertainment.
Hortus by Night – till the 5th of January
This annual event is my favorite time of year to visit Hortus Botanicus. A beautiful illuminated garden, including atmospheric greenhouses and a true winter terrace including campfire and some mulled wine. Who doesn’t light up by the idea of a beautiful green garden filled with a great number of little sparkling lights?
NeverEnding Stories: Unfairy Tales – 11th of December
As people find that December has this magical silver lining, ROSE Stories in collaboration VondelCS will host a talkshow and discussion about the classic fairytales that almost everybody knows by heart. How do these “once upon a time” stories (still) shape our perception on romance, (gender)roles and values in combination with recent social discussions.
And finally, if you’re a little (not so wonderfully) lost in Amsterdam with regards to gift shopping, you might want to keep an eye for another blog this month. 😉
Wishing you all a magical and memorable month!
