Autumn: classically referred to as the season of blankets, hot (pumpkin spiced) drinks, loads of cosy (read lazy) couch hang moments and let’s face it: rain. However, in Dutch we say: “you are not made from sugar”. Which means, you get yourself together, go outside and face the weather conditions, regardless of how “challenging” it may seem. But regardless of the weather, this weekend promises to become another very memorable weekend in my beloved Amsterdam. Allow me to let you in on some great events going down these upcoming great few days!
Driving North – Amsterdam North, 11th of October
Going to the movies, just like in the movies. This autumn-proof drive-in cinema is as old-school romantic as it gets. I suggest for the first stop to be a supermarket of any kind, to take care of possible hunger attacks and thirst during the movie. Tonight, ‘La Holandese’, a Dutch road movie (how appropriate) will play. Saturday’s edition is already sold out, so you might want to hurry a little to guarantee a spot on the lane.

Opening Ice-skating Season – Jaap Edenbaan, 12th of October
Some might think it is a winter activity, but I’d like to think differently. As the temperatures normally are a little less harsh than during winter, I just love to go ice-skating in autumn. It’s a lovely way to get some physical exercise in and just a fun activity to do with some friends. This Saturday is the opening of the new ice-skating season, which means that a little glide and slide on the ice is just 20 cents for the day.
Burgers and Bubbles Festival – The Roast Room, 12th of October
Even though the regular festival season is kind of over now, it is time for different kinds of festivals. (Inside) Food Festivals, which isn’t too bad either right? 😉 This Saturday evening, The Roast Room is hosting a Burgers and Bubbles festival. Which means, a tasting of various kinds of “kinky” burgers and as much bubbles as you like and/or can handle. And a little side note: do dress to impress, it is a bubble kind of gathering after all 😉

Read My World Festival – Tolhuistuin, 11th and 12th of October
On to another festival! This weekend is Read My World Festival in Amsterdam. It’s an international literature festival where writers, thinkers and makers come together to share their work and passion. Something that very much speaks to me is that every edition has another area or country as theme to the festival. As I am so eternally in awe of my neighbourhood and gain great joy by sharing it with you folks, I just love getting to know other parts of the world by reading. As I’d like to think, one should always aspire to inspire. And from what I heard, that’s definitely what the Moroccan authors aim for this weekend.

Sunday Market – Rokin, 13th of October
And finally, I just adore strolling around a little on a Sunday. Seeking for some treasures, planning on getting lost and just wandering around Amsterdam. This Sunday is another edition of the Sunday Market, one of my favourite markets in the city to get some lovely gifts, treat yourself on some local items and get a little snack at one of the food stands. See you there?
Enjoy it to the fullest folks!
Sincerely,
Mr. J
