De Hallen is by far my favourite hangout in Amsterdam. The industrial feel, the relaxed vibe and the diversity of things you can do, see, eat and experience at the Hallen: this place captured a piece of my heart five years ago and that hasn’t changed for one bit.
De Hallen is a truly beautiful former tram repair station. For the last five years, it has not only been home to a library, many great foodstands and a cinema but also a home to many young and creative start-ups and social working places. It creates an opportunity to all people who have the desire to actively work on their future. It aims and, in my humble opinion, successfully manages to have a positive impact on all people, including me.
Therefore, I decided upon dedicating a little tribute to De Hallen and their great birthday celebrations. And I wouldn’t be me if I wouldn’t let you in on some great (trust me on this one) personal recommendations for this weekend, all under one stunning roof.
Foodhallen Fest, 5 year anniversary – Foodhallen Amsterdam, 4th of October
So, first and foremost, a general life tip of mine is that regardless of your plans, in order to have a good time, one’s appetite has to be taken care of. No matter what. One of my go to places and to do so, especially for the slightly indecisive FOMO folks amongst us, also opened its doors already five years ago this weekend. Naturally, I am talking about the great Foodhallen. And such a major milestone has to be celebrated of course! Therefore, the Foodhallen are hosting the Foodhallen Fest, a colourful celebration of all finer things in life: live music provided by some great DJ’s, multiple fun games and of course, loads and loads of good food. And if you’re a real lucky bird, you might go home with one of the best prices ever invented: 1 year of free food at the Foodhallen Amsterdam. This birthday bash truly sounds like a real treat! See you there?!
‘De Hallen Of Fame’, Photo Exposition – De Hallen, 3th of October till the 27th of October
If you’d ask me, something that must not to be forgotten while celebrating your birthday is looking back on all great memories that you’ve made. De Hallen seems to agree. With their exposition ‘De Hallen Of Fame’, De Hallen would like to pay their gratitude to all (regular) visitors, employees and neighbours, as they have contributed significantly to the vibrant, welcoming and overall just great place that it has become. Ten people who are, in one way or the other connected to the Hallen, were portrayed and interviewed by the talented, well-known and neighbour(!) photographer, Daniel Cohen. They all individually have a unique story to tell and I cannot wait to learn all about it!
FilmHallen – De Hallen, Amsterdam
After all open-air cinemas that I’ve been to this summer, you can probably guess that I love to spend my time watching good movies in great settings. And next to “The Movies”, there is actually only one other cinema in Amsterdam that I regularly visit, which is the FilmHallen. You’ll find a broad range of genres at the FilmHallen: from price winning films from all over the world to documentaries and arthouse films are shown at the Filmhallen on a daily. They also often organise great (film)festivals and other kinds of great events. The setting is very lovely, as it is authentic, a little artistic and just quite intimate. And let’s be honest, what’s better than curing a tiny Foodhallen Fest hangover at the movies?
But for now: it’s time to take care of that appetite and celebrate at the Foodhallen folks! Cheers and have a great one!
