It will most probably come as no surprise, but FOAM Amsterdam has been a favourite museum of mine for a little while. This extraordinary place is all about photography and aims to inform and inspire a broad audience by showcasing all aspects that have to do with present-day photography. Currently, there are two exhibitions, of which one of them combines two of my main interests: photography and food! Therefore, I decided that it was time to pay a visit to FOAM and go see ‘Feast For The Eyes’ for myself…
Food has always been a prior interest of mine, but I believe that goes for most people, right? Throughout the last few years, food has gotten a more dominant role in society. Our relationship with food is nowadays more of discussion than ever. As a result, food photography has gotten more popular too. However, pictures are rarely truly about food. Food represents who we are, our values and our pleasure. Never before has food had such a big part of our culture.
‘Feast For The Eyes’ is divided into three themes: “still life”, “around the table” and “playing with your food”. Still life kind of speaks for itself whereas, the most exciting theme in my humble opinion, “Around the table”, focusses on everything that has to do with food and the cultural meaning of food and eating. The last theme is also one that made me both laugh as look twice. It combines humor, irony in food and has a very playful twist to it.
This colorful and playful exhibition truly surprised me in the best way possible! It was very optimistic exhibition, yet an eyeopener and food for thought at the same time. From a barbecue on the border of the US and Mexico to the famous Mona Lisa in a peanut butter jelly. This exhibition is definitely a must-see for all foodies amongst us! Do note that the exhibition is only until the 3d of March 2019.
Enjoy! Or should I rather say, bon appétit?
