Today marks the shortest day of the year. Well, let me define shortest, cause of course a day still counts 24 hours, but with shortest I mean the least time between sunrise and sunset. While some people might not the biggest fans of these dark days, it’s makes for the perfect setting for one of my favourite festivals: Amsterdam Light Festival.
Every year throughout December and January, the most creative and innovative artworks, from artists from all over the world, light up the historic city centre of Amsterdam. This year, during the 7th edition of this extraordinary festival, the theme is ‘The Medium is the Message’, a famous quote by Canadian scientist Marshall McLuhan. This means that he believed that the medium with which we send a message is at least as important as the message itself. More than 600 artists looked into this year’s theme and submitted their concepts. Eventually, 30 concepts were selected and realized for this edition.
The mission of Amsterdam Light festival is to bring visitors and artists from all over the world together and by showcasing high-end and innovative light artworks. Hereby the aim is to inspire, involve and to ‘light up’ the visitors, partners and inhabitants of Amsterdam, .
There are two ways to enjoy Amsterdam Light Festival, namely by foot and by boat. There is a special route if you’d prefer to go by foot, which can be found online. As for the boats, there are many organisations that offer such canal cruises. I was invited by the lovely shipping company Aemstelland to see all this year’s artworks up and close from the water. I just adored the canal cruise, the guide on board was very informative and along with some mulled wine and little bites, I enjoyed every minute of it thoroughly!
Amsterdam Light Festival is just a lovely initiative, not only does it create some stunning sights at night, but it also brings art and my beautiful, beloved city together in a very creative and accessible way for all ages. I’d definitely recommend checking it out, every art work tells a story and some of them just get you thinking and are quite frankly, just too good to miss out on!
