A week ago, a new exhibition, by internationally acclaimed photographer Cor Jaring, came to town. The exhibition will show you Amsterdam, in 1950’s till the 1980’s, through his lens.
Cor Jaring (1936-2013) is described as a remarkable photographer. He came from humble origins and started working as a dockworker. During the 50’s, he started photographing, between working hours. The subjects of his photographs were his colleagues, their work, and all the places they had to move to. His ‘kiekkassie’ (camera) came everywhere with him. He told their story, of hard work and mass redundancies, via his photographs. But it wasn’t until later that he made a name for himself as photographer.

With his portraits of John Lennon and Yoko Ono, during their ‘Bed-In for Peace’, in Amsterdam Hilton Hotel and his photographs of the Dutch ‘non-violent anarchist’ Provo movement, he gained international fame. However, there is way more truly beautiful photographs to be seen at this exhibition. And one, no two, of the best things is that the entry is free and the gallery, called Joseph & James, is just at the end of my street. How lucky am I?! Additionally, you also have the opportunity to buy one of his limited edition photographs.

I love seeing old photographs of my beautiful Amsterdam. And especially photographs that really tell a story and give you the feeling as if you were there. This is exactly what the pictures by Cor Jaring do. There are even some photographs included of the Jordaan! So, it’s definitely worth paying a visit, if you’d ask me!
Sincerely,
Mr. J

I finally visited Joseph & James in August, on my last visit to Amsterdam – a great gallery! Hopefully someday MY photos will also be shown there! I’m also hoping to live in Amsterdam…my heart remains there. I also came to visit you at the hotel, but the front desk was rather busy, and didn’t get another chance to stop by. My next visit is booked for May, 2019 – but still haven’t found a room (on my budget).
