All carnivores unite! Last week I had the most incredible dinner at a fairly new place in town: The Beefsteak Club. This new dining hotspot is located on the ‘Goudsbloemstraat’, less than a 10-minute walk away from my home. And let me tell you, it’s quite the most extraordinary experience…
When you walk into this place, you’d instantly get why I’d use the word ‘hidden gem’ to describe The Beefsteak Club. There are no major flashy signs outside and the windows are slightly covered. But once I walked in, I was delighted by what I saw. This place has an industrial, authentic, but also farm-like and warm romantic feeling to it. It’s beautifully done! Hay bales, for instance, are used as benches and there cow skin rugs are used on the chairs. I love the feel of it all!
The staff at The Beefsteak Club is truly passionate about what they do and are all very skilled. One of the chefs even used to work at one of Gordon Ramsey’s restaurants, so you’re in good hands. After you’ve taken a seat and put on your apron (so you’re ready to get down and ‘dirty’ ;)), they will guide you through the menu and their many special aged meat which are stated on a chalkboard. They will explain and show you the differences in the different pieces of meat they offer and tell you tell you everything you need to know. They also use a ‘head-to-tail principle’, which means that they use as much as possible from their meat and as little as possible is wasted. Which I’m a major fan of!
Personally, I’d strongly advise you to ask for their recommendations. Not only are they extremely knowledgeable about their meat but they also know which wine goes best with every dish. Next to the obvious meat dishes, they also offer vegetarian and vegan dishes, so there’s something for everybody.
I’d describe this place as the perfect place to spend the entire evening. I started with to delicious starters (read: coquilles and steak tartare). After that, I enjoyed the best piece of smoky, soft and tasteful meat that I’ve ever had, along with some nicely prepared broccoli and beef jerky fries. Afterwards, I couldn’t help but to order two desserts: bacon popcorn caramel cheesecake and s’mores. Which was also mouthwatering good and the perfect desserts to end the evening with. And no stress, if you’re not ready to ‘end’ the evening by then, then don’t. On the other side of the restaurant, there is a great cocktail bar where they serve some good old’ booze. One of the best bartenders of town (I’ve heard) is right behind the bar waiting to make you a cocktail, like you’ve never had before.
I could dwell on forever, but I won’t do that to you. ‘Cause sometimes, everything is simply just right. Spot on. And of course, you could eat a steak almost everywhere, but it’s not even close to how they do it here. The Beefsteak Club is the place to be for all your meat cravings and I can’t wait to spend many more great evenings at The Beefsteak Club.
