Finally! Summer time. And what goes better with sunshine than some lovely, home made Italian ice cream? Well, this is the story behind my favorite ice cream shop in the Jordaan district, Monte Pelmo.
The shop has a long, long history. Around 1957 they original owners, the family Cornelisse, started a snackbar. Riek and Chris Cornelissen mainly served Italian food to (Italian) emigrants. The family started noticing a high demand for Italian ice cream in the Jordaan neighborhood. Soon the family Cornelisse bought their first ice cream machine and started experimenting. After a year of testing, experimenting and perfecting, they ice cream quickly became popular.

After two years the Monte Pelmo ice cream was immensely popular, on every local market you’d find a mobile ice cream cart. This made them decide that they could use a separate location, for just producing and selling ice cream. In 1966 they found this location on the 2e Anjeliersdwarsstraat nr. 17! They started expanding their brand, and delivered ice cream to many restaurants and shops. They experimented with the weirdest flavors, like ginger or spinach-tomato!

And today the day, the family Cornelisse still produces lovely, yummy ice cream in original and unique flavors. While walking down the 2e Anjeliersdwarsstraat you’ll see where you need to be, a long line of ice cream-hungry customers waiting for their treat.
Sincerely,
Mr. J.
