We have a new gallery in town! Joseph & James recently opened its doors, a beautiful building just on the corner of the Bloemgracht and the Prinsengracht.
Joseph & James is not named after some hip duo. No, it refers to two of the biggest influencers in the history of photography. Joseph Nicéphore Niépce actually took the first photograph ever, not so artsy but the first nonetheless. James Clerk Maxwell took the first colored photograph. So, these two influencers together make the art gallery’s name Joseph & James.
The gallery wants to introduce people to great photographers, both up-coming and established. While doing this they will increase the number of copies and make their works accessible to a wider audience of collectors. Each item is produced by a Dutch photo lab and comes with a numbered and signed certificate of authenticity of the artist.

The store at the Bloemgracht 2 is just gorgeous. Their style is warm with a touch of vintage. Which totally suits me, if you have ever seen my home you know what I am talking about. This is a total opposite from the many designer galleries I have seen. Most of the artists at Joseph & James have some kind of connection with Amsterdam. They can be Amsterdam based, influenced by the city or its culture. For example Niels van Tol and his series ‘Orientation Amsterdam’. He uses analog equipment and experiments with multi-exposure shots, which create an atmosphere of disillusion.
Their Amsterdam related pieces really speak to me, combine with the gorgeous interior makes this one of my new favorite galleries in town. If you are looking for affordable art photographs Joseph & James is definitely a great option.
Sincerely,
Mr. J.
