So, time for a new story! Today I would like to tell you a little something about the Museum of bags and purses. Maybe a little more ‘off the radar’ activity, but an amazing one if I may say. Located at the Herengracht, this small museum specializes in the history of bags and purses and is the biggest one yet. With a collection of over 5000 pieces the museum shows you a unique view in different styles, techniques and crafts. Every bag tells its own story. The magnificent 17th century canal house adds an unique, historic atmosphere to its collection.
Nowadays, the handbag is mainly a women’s accessoires. Historically, the handbag originated as a practical appliance for men. Back when there were no pockets invented yet, bags and purses were used by men to carry money and other items. Most of these bags were worn on a belt and were made of mostly leather of woven fabrics. Luxury models we often made of more precious materials and beautifully embroidered. With the introduction of inside pockets the men’s bag slowly started disappearing.

This month the museum hosts a very special exhibition named: Bampo. Bampo is a Chinese brand which is now making its debut in Europe. The brand has been translating traditional Chinese culture, techniques and crafts into modern designs. Which results in the most precious patterns, designs and products. Ancient Chinese craftsmanship is reflected in the various collections, such as ‘Porcelain’, ‘Bamboo’ and ‘Ink’. Definitely worth seeing some of these beautiful pieces in real life, if you ask me.
Besides the beautiful collection and unique exhibitions, the museum also offers a great high tea and lunch. So if you’d like, you can combine your visit with a yummy high tea or lunch in one of their special ‘period rooms’. Enjoy the historic vibe, with some great food and snacks. Don’t worry, if you fall desperately in love with the location and the building, they have serval rooms which can be used for events, parties or meetings. So start planning!
Sincerely,
Mr. J.
