In its transmission from a typical Amsterdam ‘Volksbuurt’ to a hotspot, the Jordaan became on of the most romanticized city districts of Amsterdam. This is one of the many reasons why I love the Jordaan District, it’s authentic character and romantic vibe. After the big renovation of the city district in the seventies, the Jordaan got discovered by many artists from different disciplines. The Jordaan became a regular subject for popular folk songs. A good example of such an artist is Johnny Jordaan. So let me tell you something about him.
Johnny Jordaan started preforming as a street artists at age eight, to make some extra money for his family. Later he kept singing as a hobby in small cafes, next to the several jobs he already had. During this period, the name ‘Johnny Jordaan’ came to life. He is most famous for his songs about the Jordaan and Amsterdam itself. His big breakthrough came in 1955 when he won a competition from the record company ‘Bovema’, whom was looking for ‘the best voices of the Jordaan’. His single ‘bij ons in de Jordaan’ still remains a big hit in the small, Amsterdam cafes today.

After his dead in 1989, money was collected for a statue to remember him by. The statue was placed in the small square, at the end of the Elandsgracht. People wanted to rename this little square after the singer. After some struggles, this was exactly what happend. Nowadays, his statue is accompanied by four additional statues. Those of the famous singers; Tante Leen, Johnny Meijer, Manke Nelis and Jan & Mien. The ‘Johnny Jordaanplein’ is a beautiful place, with a nice touch of Jordaan history.
The Johnny Jordaan square is located near the nine streets. So you can combine a visit to the square with a stroll around the many shops, boutiques and concept stores in this area. Have fun!
Sincerely,
Mr. J
