Today Wim Sonneveld would have celebrated his 100th birthday. He was an impeccable cabaret artist and amazing singer. Till this day, Sonneveld is still considered one of the greatest Dutch cabaret artists, along with Toon Hermans and Wim Kan. Originally born in Utrecht, Sonneveld moved to Amsterdam in 1936 with his friend Huub Janssen. During this period he lived at the Westermarkt and later the Prinsengracht. Both in the heart of the Jordaan.
Soon he started a cabaret group called ‘Cabaret Wim Sonneveld’ and got several roles in plays and big musicals. Between 1943 and 1959, Sonneveld did 25(!) cabaret productions with this group. Sonneveld never liked being completely alone on stage, so he always had other people joining him on stage. In 1974 Sonneveld suffered from a rather big heart attack while driving his car. After a few weeks of recovery he felt relatively well. At this time he even did an interview in which he stated all the beautiful things he had in store for the future. Not soon after, Sonneveld suffered a second fatal heart attack and died at the age of 56.
Sure to say that Wim Sonneveld made a hugh impact with his timeless humor and amazing character. At the Egelantiersgracht, in the Jordaan district, you can still find his influence for example. Café Sonneveld, as the name clearly states is dedicated to the artist, his lifework and his career. The café is a typical, Dutch diner serving delicious and freshly prepared dishes. Its interior is decorated with many photos and other memorabilia of the famous artist.

Pictures Café Sonneveld.
This upcoming month Café Sonneveld celebrates the life of Wim Sonneveld. They have a special menu and several events during this period. Definitely worth a visit if you ask me! If not only for the great food and atmosphere.
Sincerely,
Mr. J
